What geolocation database does Matomo Cloud use?
Matomo Cloud uses the MaxMind City geolocation database to determine the location of your visitors. This database provides city-level accuracy with broad global coverage, and is automatically updated once per week to ensure reliability.
Unlike Matomo On-Premise, you do not need to manually download or configure the geolocation database as Matomo Cloud handles this for you automatically.
Geolocation data in Matomo Cloud is used to populate reports such as:
- Visitors > Locations (Country, Region, City)
- Visitors > Real-time visitor map
- Geo-based segmentation (e.g. filter by country or region)
When a visitor’s location appears as Unknown
or incorrect, they could be using a VPN, proxy, or privacy tools or there is limited accuracy for certain IP ranges or mobile networks.
Can I change the geolocation method in Matomo Cloud?
In Matomo Cloud, the geolocation method is fixed and optimised for reliable automatic detection and cannot be changed. Only Matomo On-Premise users have access to settings for switching geolocation providers or uploading custom databases.
