The Visitors Software Report
The Visitors > Software report in Matomo helps you to understand the tools your visitors use to access your website. This can be especially useful for informing your implementation strategy for development projects, as it provides insights into the most common browsers, operating systems, and devices used by your audience.
Access the Software report from the Visitors menu in the main menu of the Matomo dashboard.
For each of the table reports, hover your mouse over any row to reveal a relative percentage of your overall visitors and click the following icons to drill-down into the data:
Open the Segmented Visits Log loads a visits log for users within your chosen dimension.
Open the Row Evolution and a popup window displays for you to analyse the specific metric over time.
Note: Hover the mouse along the bottom of the report to reveal additional visualisation report options.
The four main reports available in the Software section are detailed below.
Operating System Versions Report
This report shows the device operating system version most commonly used by your visitors. This helps you to ensure your websites/apps (for e-commerce, content management, and other digital services) are compatible with the majority of your visitors’ devices.

Operating System Families Report (Related Report)
Click on the related report link in the Operating System Versions report to view Operating System families. This is less-specific as it combines all versions of the operating system to give an overview of the different types of operating versions used by your visitors. Browsers Report
The Browsers report shows the range of browsers used to access your website/app. It can inform developers on which browsers to support and help marketers and analysts filter out bot visits usually indicated by a significant number of visits from headless browsers. Creating a segment that excludes these bot visits can provide a more accurate representation of your actual visitors.

Browser Version Report (Related Report)
The Browser Version report can be accessed by clicking the related report link at the bottom of the Browsers table. This report could be useful if you want to integrate a feature with your website that only works in browsers after a certain version.
In this case, you could refer to this report to see exactly how many visitors will be excluded from using the new functionality. The report contains a link to the related report for Browsers.
Configurations Report
The Configurations report shows the operating system, browser and screen resolutions your visitors use. On its own, it can suggest combinations that you may want to test with your website/app. Additionally, if using this with Crash Analytics, it may reveal specific configurations with problems that require further investigation.
The report contains a link to the related report for Screen Resolution.
Screen Resolution Report (Related Report)
The Screen Resolution report is the same as the report found on the Devices Report page. It can be a useful report for website development and conversion optimisation. When developing new layouts you can optimise for your most popular resolutions. Additionally, you can check that important call to actions work well on the resolutions most used by your visitors.
Browser Engines Report
By default, the Browser Engines report is displayed as a pie chart and you can convert it to a table (or other formats) if desired. Hover your mouse over the chart and click the pie chart icon to load a menu containing more options.
Certain browser engines support technologies like modern media formats, while others may not. Knowing the browser engines used by your visitors can help make more informed technology decisions.
Browser Plugins
The Browser Plugins report provides a view into which plugins your visitors have enabled. If your website/app relies on specific plugins for full functionality, you can analyse whether your website’s features will function for the majority of visitors.
While outdated technologies like Flash have largely fallen out of use, other plugins, such as support for Cookies and PDF viewing, remain essential in many contexts. Reviewing this data ensures that your website is compatible with the browsing capabilities of your audience.
