Licences

Matomo Analytics platform license

Matomo Analytics is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (or later).

You can learn more about the advantages of our license in our Freedom software guide.

Licenses for software bundled with Matomo

Matomo includes several open source software projects along with the Matomo platform.

Softwares and libraries used by Matomo are documented in the /LEGALNOTICE file at the root of Matomo.

Licenses compatible with Matomo

We can only accept individual code contributions, new plugins or libraries if they are released under a license compatible with GPL v3.

The FSF has published a list of GPL-Compatible Free Licenses. To limit license proliferation, the Matomo (Piwik) project accepts software in the public domain or released under the following licenses:

– GPL v3
– LGPL
– New BSD (current default licensing for unlicensed contributions; see below)
– MIT (see below)
– Apache v2

While the Affero GPL v3 is listed as compatible with GPL v3 (i.e., modules or source files under both licenses may be combined in a single project), the Matomo project will not accept software (e.g., plugins) licensed under Affero GPL v3, because the FSF list states, “you cannot take code released under the GNU AGPL and convey or modify it however you like under the terms of GPLv3, or vice versa.” This hinders software maintenance (e.g., refactoring) and future development.

New BSD License (used for example for matomo.js)

For reference, when we refer to the “New BSD License” (or “Modified BSD License” or “The 3-Clause BSD License”), we are referring to 3-clause variant.
