Pixel tracking
Pixel tracking is an alternative tracking method where JavaScript cannot be used. Some websites restrict JavaScript but allow HTML, making the pixel tracker (image beacons) a viable option for tracking visits in Matomo. Unlike JavaScript tracking, the Matomo Image Tracker does not use cookies but can collect visitor IP address, data and time of request, URL of the page viewed, location of the user, browser, operating system, device used and main language of the browser.
Various authorities, e.g., European Data Protection Board and the UK ICO, consider pixel tracking (image beacons) to fall within the scope of ePrivacy Directive, particularly under Article 5(3), which regulates the use of tracking technologies. Depending on the privacy laws that apply to your website, explicit user consent may be required before loading the Matomo Image Tracker.
