Compare segment data
Comparing Segments highlights how different groups of visitors behave relative to each other. It can identify which audience performs better and understand what drives engagement, conversion, or churn. For example, you can compare:
- Users with accounts vs users without accounts.
- Returning visitors vs new visitors.
- Traffic from different channels or countries.
Comparison helps surface differences that are not obvious when viewing a single dataset or manually comparing separate reports.
Use comparison features
Comparing segments makes it easier to spot anomalies, investigate performance changes, and make informed decisions based on clear data differences.
- Use the segment selector to choose the first segment for comparison.
- From your Matomo Dashboard, open the segment selector and click the Compare icon
next to the second segment you want to compare against.
- This displays both segments side by side in any compatible report.
- Active segments are colour-coded and shown as removable cards at the top of the page.
Compare date ranges
Date comparison provides a quick view of performance over time. You can analyse trends and seasonal patterns, and compare campaign performance across periods. For example, assess whether a campaign performed better for different groups across defined date ranges.
- While comparing two segments, use the date selector compare by a custom date range, day, week, month, year, or choose from the list of time period options.
Managing segments
A dedicated segments management page is available under Visitors > Segments or by clicking the Manage Segments button in the segment selector.
This page provides a central overview of all configured segments and helps streamline segment management:
- View key metrics such as the total number of Visits and Actions for each segment (for the selected date period).
- View evolution data to analyse how segment performance changes over time.
- Open individual segments to review their configuration.
- Edit or delete segments from a single location.
The Manage Segments page makes it easier to maintain segments, review their impact, and ensure they remain relevant to your analysis.
