You’ve installed Matomo tracking. Now let’s make sure data is actually reaching your Matomo account.
The easiest way to check is to generate a visit yourself and look for it in Matomo’s Real-time report: you visit your own site, then watch your visit appear in Matomo within seconds. Once you see it, your setup is confirmed and you are ready to explore your data!
If your visit does not show up, the fixes below solve most cases, and our team can help with the rest. We’re here to help.
Step 1 Open the Real-time report
In Matomo, go to Visitors > Real-time.
This report shows visits as they happen. It refreshes every few seconds, and new visits appear at the top. You also see counters for the last 30 minutes and the last 24 hours.
Make sure you’re looking at the right website in the website selector.
Step 2 Create a visit on your own site to edit a long text to expand in several lines
Open the website you just connected in a new browser tab. Click through two or three pages. This sends real data to Matomo.
To make your test easier to spot:
- Open your website in a new browser tab.
- Visit two or three pages.
- Click a link or two.
- Leave the tab open for now.
That’s enough. You’ve just created some activity for Matomo to track.
💡 Matomo Tips
Use a normal browser tab, not a private window with strict blocking.
Step 3 Watch your visit appear
Go back to Matomo and look at the Real-time report. Within a few seconds, your visit shows up, with the pages you viewed, your device, and your location.
Step 4 Checkout your tracking set up
Look at the newest visit at the top of the report. You should see activity corresponding to the pages you just visited.
You can see your own visit in the Real-time report. Your tracking works, and you are ready to read your reports.
Don’t worry about understanding all of this yet. We’ll learn how to read your reports in the next step.
For now, you only need to answer one question: Can you see your visit?
🎉 Yes, I can see it
Great! Your Matomo is working!
You’ve completed one of the most important parts of you setup: Matomo is receiving real activity from your website!
You can move on to your first reports.
❌ No, I can’t see it yet
Don’t worry! Tracking issues are common during initial setup and are usually caused by a small configuration problem. Work through these in order. Each one fixes a common cause:
• Check the website selector. Make sure you’re viewing the same website you just configured.
• Check the date. Real-time show the last 30 minutes. Standard reports and Visits Log default to yesterday, so set the date to Today if you just installed.
• Try without browser extensions and no adblockers. Ad blockers and other content-blocking extensions can prevent analytics scripts from loading. Try a private window with extensions disabled.
• Check Do Not Track. If your browser has Do Not Track switched on, your own visit may not be counted. If your browser has Do Not Track switched on, your own visit may not be counted.
• Using Tag Manager? Check that your container is published.
• Using JavaScript tracking? Check that the tracking code contains the correct Site ID and is live on the page you’re testing.
• Clear your cache. Your CMS or CDN may serve an old page without the code. Clear the cache and reload.
• Confirm the Site ID. Make sure the code uses the Site ID of the site you created.
Then relaod your website, visit a few pages and check Visitors > Real-time again.
