Software Engineering Manager

We’re looking for an experienced self-motivated and results-oriented Software Engineering Manager who has a proven track record of building and scaling teams to manage, guide and expand our growing engineering department. 

We are the creators of Matomo, the leading open source web analytics solution used on 1 million websites worldwide, that gives people full control of their data and built-in privacy. Our web analytics solution can be self-hosted On-Premise, and we also have an AWS hosted SaaS service. We’ve experienced great growth over the last years and are growing our teams.

As the Engineering Manager, you will be overseeing all our 4 engineering leads and report directly to the CTO. The 4 teams consist of Software Engineers, DevOps Engineers, Web Developers and a Security Web Engineer. You will be the interface between the technical team, the product management team, and the business. You also ensure that the team accomplishes their projects’ goals within time and quality standards. 

This role is hands-on minimally, but strong technical experience around web technologies, web languages, debugging, and testing are required. Ideally, you also have experience in cloud hosting.

Key Responsibilities 

Goals & Strategies

  • Represent the Software Engineering Teams in the business
  • Understand at a high level all the different products, websites and services we offer and how they are connected technically and to the business
  • Make recommendations to the CTO for technological resources needed to meet the company’s short and long-term goals
  • Manage all the activities of the Software Engineering Teams to set attainable goals for teams to ensure that projects are completed on time and within quality standards

Project Management & Reporting

  • Manage multiple projects at once
  • Assess and manage risks before and during the project
  • Monitor, evaluate, ensure and report on the completion of agile projects
  • Create reports for leadership on the business unit’s performance metrics
  • Write, review and revise product requirements and specifications with the Product Manager and stakeholders

Process Best Practice

  • Create and improve best practices and processes for quality, compliance and efficiency
  • Ensure best practice procedures and processes are documented and followed when it comes to software engineering. This includes the security and privacy policies

People Capacity and Capability

  • Provide guidance to teams to improve work productivity 
  • Provide leadership to the engineering teams’ including communicating the positive impacts their work is having on the business
  • Provide mentorship to troubleshoot technical and non-technical issues when they need help and be the point of escalation
  • Maintain the engineering onboarding and mentoring program
  • Recognise and reward good performance
  • Poor performance is managed promptly and effectively
  • Design and maintain the software engineering career framework
  • Support the hiring process and onboarding of new engineers

Minimum qualifications

  • 10+ years’ hands-on experience as a Software Engineer
  • 3+ years experience in a technical management position
  • Proven track record of building and scaling teams
  • Experience working with complex product development
  • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science or related discipline
  • Extensive project management experience
